Pure iodine appears as dark gray to purple-black, lustrous crystalline solid with a metallic sheen. When gently heated, it sublimes directly to violet vapor with a characteristic sharp odor. Iodine crystals are slightly soluble in water but dissolve readily in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, or carbon tetrachloride.
